I wanted to create a setup that allowed me to drive animation with larger patterns, but not lose a lot of control, so I created a setup where any composition simply reads the luminance of a driver layer that's made invisible. In this case the animation is incredibly simple and set up in a tight grid with some matting to make the depth effect work, but the animation could be anything, and so can the amount of nodes, spacing between them etc. Hopefully one day I'll get around to creating a more interesting animation to bring this to something more interesting, not just a proof of concept.
